5. Digital Citizenship
ISTE Coach Standards in Action
b. Model and facilitate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
In an effort to promote digital citizenship at LA CAUSA YouthBuild, I developed the following poster board using Google Drawings to be posted in the computer rooms and by the laptop carts. I facilitated an hour professional development session with the staff at the site to review the poster board and engage in a conversation on how we digital citizenship is taught at our site. Many teachers have not heard of the term "digital citizenship" although they knew the basics behind online safety. Teachers left the professional development with the poster board bellow along with tips and ideas on how to incorporate digital citizenship with different assignments in their classes, especially when online research is being conducted.
Reflecting on this experience, I would like to spend more time on the issue along with a student assembly on what "digital citizenship" looks like. Modeling and explaining the ethical uses of digital information and technologies is now a topic that is being discussed at the site. Students are now reminded of the 5 questions bellow before posting anything online. Creating an atmosphere and culture of self-awareness is furthered developed by the staff members that use this visual as a constant reminder to our students to model safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.

c. Model and promote diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness by using digital age communication and collaboration tools to interact locally and globally with students, peers, parents, and the larger community.
The purpose of the LA CAUSA YouthBuild eNewsletter is to promote diversity, cultural understanding and global awareness to our students, peers, parents and the larger community of East Los Angeles. Created by myself and our English teacher, we are able to communicate with all our stakeholders and students on issues going on in our community and how LA CAUSA is addressing many of these issues in our community. Parents can also subscribe to the newsletter as well as any stakeholder or person interested in our program. This is a great way to promote the program to our community and keep students abreast to updates, news and community events they can take part in.
This project meets this indicator by introducing students, peers, parents and the larger community of East Los Angeles with a digital age communication method, the email to collaborate and disseminate information in a large scale. I use the application MailChimp to ensure that subscribes stay updated and the ease of MailChimps ensures that the email format is visually pleasant and easy to read. Collaborating with Mario Rosado, the English teacher of LA CAUSA YouthBuild has also lead to new ideas and creativity in this project.
As I reflect on the newsletter, I would like to collaborate with students in this venture. Having student's buy in and voice in the newsletter will result in them being more invested in the newsletter. In particular, the student Policy Committee can take lead in adding editorials and segments on the newsletter to increase student involvement in school events and increase their collaboration skills.
